From Tom Seymour – Founder of Equate

With over two decades in the thoroughbred breeding and racing industry, including eight years as Head of Marketing for Darley Australia, I have seen first-hand both the strengths of our sector and the inefficiencies that hold it back. 

My career has been driven by a belief that progress comes from challenging the status quo, respectfully, but with a clear focus on solutions.

In 2021, I developed Breedr, the industry’s first fully digital stallion booking platform. Breedr was designed to simplify the nomination process, connect breeders with stallion farms more efficiently, and open up new markets for service providers. 

The experience of launching and running Breedr, while also being a breeder and racehorse owner myself, put me directly at the coal face of the industry’s operational and cultural challenges. 

It became clear that if innovation like Breedr was to reach its full potential, the industry needed to broaden its awareness of what was possible and fast-track its adoption of modern tools.

That realisation was the catalyst for Equate. I created Equate as a forum where every corner of the industry - breeders, trainers, vets, administrators, tech providers, and investors, could come together to explore how innovation, data, and technology can deliver tangible improvements. 

Our most recent seminar brought global technology leaders from Google, Meta, and other pioneering companies into the same room as industry participants, sparking conversations that would not have happened otherwise.

Equate’s goals are threefold:

1. Education – demystifying AI, data analytics, and emerging tools so participants can see practical applications for their own operations.
    
2. Connection – building a network that spans sectors and geographies, enabling the sharing of knowledge and best practice.
    
3. Momentum – turning ideas into action by showcasing real-world examples of cost savings, welfare improvements, and operational efficiencies.
    

For me, Equate is more than an event. It’s the beginning of an innovation movement in the thoroughbred industry.

I see it evolving into a year-round platform, a connected hub for learning, testing new technologies, and building collaborations that will make our global industry more competitive, sustainable, and attractive to the next generation of participants.

Our industry faces critical headwinds: cost of ownership, workforce shortages, and increasing welfare expectations. By embracing modern tools and transparent systems, we can turn these challenges into opportunities. 

Equate, alongside Breedr, is here to help lead that transformation from both a service provider’s and participant’s perspective.
